How to Reduce Fractions

Reducing fractions (also called simplifying fractions) means making a fraction as simple as possible by dividing both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD).

Steps to Reduce a Fraction:

  1. Find the GCD of the numerator and denominator
  2. Divide both numbers by their GCD
  3. The resulting fraction is in its simplest form

Example:

To reduce 8/12:

  • Find the GCD of 8 and 12 (which is 4)
  • Divide both numbers by 4
  • 8 ÷ 4 = 2 (new numerator)
  • 12 ÷ 4 = 3 (new denominator)
  • The reduced fraction is 2/3
