Understanding Weighted Averages
What is a Weighted Average?
A weighted average gives different importance (weight) to different values in a calculation, unlike a simple average where all values are treated equally.
Formula
Weighted Average = (v₁×w₁ + v₂×w₂ + ... + vₙ×wₙ) ÷ (w₁ + w₂ + ... + wₙ)
Where v = value and w = weight
Common Applications
- • GPA calculation (credits as weights)
- • Investment portfolio returns
- • Grade calculations (assignment weights)
- • Statistical analysis (weighted surveys)
