How to Convert Volts to Amps
Converting voltage (V) to current (I) requires using either power (P) or resistance (R). Here are the two main methods:
Using Power (Watts Law)
I = P ÷ V
where:
- I = Current in Amperes (A)
- P = Power in Watts (W)
- V = Voltage in Volts (V)
Using Resistance (Ohm's Law)
I = V ÷ R
where:
- I = Current in Amperes (A)
- V = Voltage in Volts (V)
- R = Resistance in Ohms (Ω)
Common Applications
- Calculating current draw of electrical devices
- Sizing circuit breakers and fuses
- Determining wire gauge requirements
- Battery and power supply calculations
