Understanding Variance

Variance measures how far a set of numbers spreads out from their average (mean). A small variance indicates that the data points tend to be close to the mean, while a high variance indicates that the data points are more spread out.

Population vs Sample Variance

Choose population variance when you have data for an entire group, and sample variance when you have data for only a portion of the group. Sample variance uses n-1 in the denominator (Bessel's correction) to provide an unbiased estimate.
