Understanding Slope and Linear Equations
What is Slope?
Slope represents the steepness of a line and is calculated as the change in y-coordinates divided by the change in x-coordinates between two points. It tells us how much the line rises or falls for each unit of horizontal change.
Point-Slope Form
The point-slope form of a line is y - y₁ = m(x - x₁), where m is the slope and (x₁,y₁) is a point on the line. This form is particularly useful when you know a point and the slope of the line.
Slope-Intercept Form
The slope-intercept form is y = mx + b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept (where the line crosses the y-axis). This is the most commonly used form of a linear equation.
