Understanding Dimensional Weight

Dimensional weight, often called "dim weight," is a pricing technique used by shipping carriers to ensure that lightweight, low-density packages contribute their fair share of costs based on the space they occupy in delivery vehicles.

How It's Calculated

The formula for dimensional weight is:

Dimensional Weight = (Length × Width × Height) ÷ Divisor

Where the divisor varies by carrier:

  • USPS: 166
  • UPS: 139
  • FedEx: 139

Important Notes

  • All measurements should be in inches
  • The actual shipping cost will be based on the greater of dimensional weight or actual weight
  • Some carriers may use different divisors for certain shipping services or international destinations
