Understanding Your Child's BMI
Body Mass Index (BMI) is an important screening tool for potential weight issues in children. Unlike adult BMI, children's BMI is age and gender-specific due to their continuous growth and development.
BMI Percentile Categories
- Underweight: Less than 5th percentile
- Healthy Weight: 5th to 85th percentile
- Overweight: 85th to 95th percentile
- Obese: Greater than 95th percentile
Important Considerations
While BMI is a useful screening tool, it should not be used as the sole diagnostic measure. Factors such as muscle mass, bone density, overall physical development, and other health indicators should be considered in consultation with your healthcare provider.
